add version to all rest APIs that return versioned items

I'm using the REST API to report the versions of a bunch of stuff. First I need to get the list of items and then query the versions one by one for each item. It's very slow. It would be great if the current version just showed up in the fields. I should only have to use the versions API if I want to know about previous versions.
