Report to consolidate downstream items into a single doc?

  • 1.  Report to consolidate downstream items into a single doc?

    Posted 5 days ago
    Hi there-
My project team uses a Jama item hierarchy along the lines of Capabilities\Features\Stories\Design-Func Specs\Test cases. Relationships are defined between all items. We'd like to be able to roll-up the contents of linked items into a single doc. For example, for a given Feature we'd like to have all downstream Stories\DS-FS\Test cases saved to a single doc. Is it possible to do that without turning to advanced reporting?
    Thanks.

    George:

You can use our advanced filters to pull these items and then export the filter contents to Excel and/or Word documents. Sounds like your item hierarchy is well defined, you can filter by downstream and/or upstream using multiple identifiers and embedded filters to get the exact items you want. Play around with it and see. This should pull the information generally for you but, the advanced reporting is useful when you want the information to load in a particular way or look a certain way.

Let us know if this is a good enough workaround to get out of the advanced reporting!

    Hi Chloe-
I'm having a little trouble figuring this one out, so any guidance you could offer would be appreciated.
To recap: I want a filter to query for all items downstream of a given Feature.
To start with I need to Match: All item types
However, I'm stuck on how to identify a particular FEAT and then pull in all downstream items. I've assuming the Has Downstream items attribute holds the answer but I'm having a brain cramp setting up the embedded filter.

If you want to target a particular Feature item and its downstream items I would start with this:

    Match: Features according to: ALL.
Name contains word: "Put the name of the particular FEAT you are targeting"
AND: has downstream items that are of relationship type.....(click to insert embedded filter)

In order to capture all the downstream items of this particular Feature item I would set this embedded filter to match All Item Types according to Any Name that is not empty. This will pull anything downstream item which has a Name in the Name field, which every item should have a name....

George, did I fully understand what you are trying to accomplish here? Let me know if I can assist further.

    Hi George -
You might also need to consider your relationship rules. Note that this embedded filter will only return the items that are directly related to a Feature. If your relationship rule defines a decomposition chain of relationships - Capabilities to Features to Stories to DS-FS to Test Cases - the embedded filter will stop at Stories. It won't return the DS-FS and Test Cases that are downstream from the Story(ies). Other tools can supply more than 2 levels of traceability.
    Thanks,

    Hi Chloe and Theresa -
Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately the filter didn't work me. Our hierarchy doesn't allow linking of all items to FEATs, so I suspect Theresa's comment partially explains a limitation we face. More basically, although I set up a filter just like your example, Chloe, I couldn't get the filter to display more than just the specified feature. I wonder if that's because the filter is set up to match with Features only (as in, match all FEATs that have ID foo AND have downstream items that contain names). Thoughts?

I rechecked this and you are right, found another option for you though. Have you looked at exporting the Traceview into an Excel doc?

    Hi Chloe-
Thanks for your attention to this. I'm familiar with the Coverage Explorer. However, our goal is to consolidate all the downstream item content into a Word doc, so the mapping of downstream items won't quite accomplish that. It sounds like we'd likely need a custom BIRT/Velocity report to collect this information. Would you agree?

    George:

Yes, I would agree. We put these areas under the Community Education tab for information on BIRT or Velocity reporting. You can look at these resources to make your own BIRT or Velocity report. We do have some Community reports we provide, I don't see an example of Word doc that has exactly what you want but, you can use these to get your custom report started. There is an Upstream Traceability report but, it is not in the format you are wanting.

If you find that you need more assistance, let your Account Manager know and they can recommend the right Professional Services to help you create your own report or have our Reporting specialists make a custom one to your specifications.

    Thanks,
