Allow "on the fly" Trace Views from search results without the need to save the underlying filter

    Hi everyone,

we would like to see the following be possible within Jama:
When our users want to investigate the traceability a certain set of items they set the starting point of that Trace View by defining filter criteria. Now they click "View in list" and the Trace View button is grayed out. So they need to save the filter and start from there. As this results in many unneeded saved filters it would be great if one could start a trace view also from the List View. Our users would be fine if such Trace Views could only be saved if the underlying filter is a real saved filter, as they use them only once in such cases.

I'm going to speculate as to why this may never be implemented:

A saved filter probably causes indexes to be generated in the background, which is a likely prerequisite for generating a trace view. To make trace view available for on-the-fly filters, the system would have to always begin generating indexes whenever a filter is specified, on the assumption that the user might want to click the trace view button. This could be a significant performance hit on the server.

I could be dead wrong about this, but just thought I'd throw it out there.
