  • 1.  Baselines are not a snapshot of the project

    Posted 11-06-2023 02:36

    Hello,

I need to understand why Jama does not include item relationships (Links) in Baselines.

Benefit? Reason? Was Jama designed to work like this?

The sentence "... A baseline is a snapshot of your project..." is not 100% true since some fields are modifiable and relationships (links between items) are not included.

In addition, it looks like some Jama articles are confusing regarding this point. Because of the word "RELATIONSHIPS":

    • RELATIONSHIPS: Link between two item types in Jama.
    • RELATIONSHIPS: Association between a version of an item version and a baseline.

Relationships are captured in a baseline.   So when you open a baseline in the GUI, for each item in the baseline, you can see what relationships that item had when the baseline was created.   One thing that might be confusing is that although a baseline does capture relationships, the "replace with baseline" operation only modifies the current field information, and does not update the current relationship information.

I believe the text in the first red circle is correct and reasonably clear (in particular, it correctly states that relationships are captured in a baseline).

In the second red circle, would the following alternative text be clearer?

    • When you add a relationship to an item, the version of the item doesn't change.

    • Relationships are not modified when you use the "replace with baseline" operation.

The text in the third red circle is correct ... this just emphasizes the fact that the "Replace with baseline" operation will not modify any relationship information, in particular, will not restore deleted relationships.

    Hello Geoffrey,

Thank you for your message and for clarifying these points.

    I have som more questions:

1- Regarding to your proposal, I would say "When you add a RELATIONSHIP OF TYPE BASELINE to an item, the version of the item doesn't change."

I think you must specify what kind of relationship since you refer to a "baseline relationship" and not to a "relationship between items"

2- Would it make sense to provide an option to enable or not to replace the relationships between items as well?

3- Is it possible to generate a Context Report from a Baseline? A baseline from a part of the project and a baseline from the whole project?

Thank you so mnuch! Best regards,

    (1) I think you were being confused by the user guide statement "When you add a relationship to a baseline".  I believe this is just a typo, and should say "When you add a relationship to an item".   There is no such thing as a "baseline relationship" ... there are only "item relationships" (i.e. relationships between two items).

    (2) I agree that would make sense, but you would need to submit an Ideation (enhancement) request for that, since that is not currently supported.

    (3) Yes, you can run a Baseline Comparison report on a baseline of the whole project and a baseline of a part of the project.

    Hi Geoffrey,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I have seen, the relationships of the items are not baselined. Meaning, if a change in the relationships (whether an addition or deletion) has been made since the creation of the baseline, the relationships shown in the baselines are as of the current version.

If you open a baseline in a List View, and click on "related items" for a given item, it will show you the relationships at the time the baseline was created, not the current relationships.   Similarly, if you compare two baselines, and look at the related items in the comparison view, it will show you what relationships have been added and removed between the baselines being compared.

    Hey Geoffrey,

related to this: is it possible to view the related items in a review? I can't seem to be able to do this? We would need this to review the traceability itself.

To make related items part of a review, you would need to base the review on a filter.
