  • 1.  Different database content if item is created via Excel import vs. Add New Item

    Hi!

I have noticed the following behaviour:
When I create items via Excel import (no round-trip; new items are created) field values from empty Excel cells are assigned a NULL value in the database.

When I create a new item in the same set via Add-New Item without entering values, the field value in the database is an empty string.

Is this as desired? The NULL values create issues with reporting.

Screenshot in attachment. The upper line is the result from an Excel import, the lower line is created via Add-New Item leaving all fields blank. Check string1..4 values.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Peter,

Is this happening with every Excel import report, or is it only happening with a specific report but functioning with others?

    Hi Carly!

The behaviour seems to be systematic. When items are created in the GUI, for fields that are left empty an empty string "" is written to the DB (dbo.document), whereas empty fields in new items created by an Excel import are written as NULL values to the DB.

I am working around it by checking for "" or NULL if I want to know if a data field is empty ("$!variable"=="" in VTL).

    Kind regards,
