We have the same issue and I think I found out a possible reason for it (in my opinion this is a defect):
In the trace view, only items whose Global ID is greater than the selected item are highlighted. I played around in the Sandbox and here some examples:

I noticed one thing.
When I initially generated the trace view, shade for 1 level down items and source items match (see the attached screen shot). However, when I select a source item, the shade does not match anymore. I have the issue only the items the shade do not match. I do not know what cause this mismatch. I checked COV-CTC-2494, 2495 pair and COV-CTC-2581, 2582 pair. I did not see any differences. All of them have multiple upstream items. All have synchronized items, no downstream item, no suspect, not in review.

Sorry for my 101 question, but I've noticed that when I click one source item on the Trace View, some of 1 level down items are highlighted. Please see the attached screen shot.
What is the differences between highlighted and not highlighted item? I am using Jama 8.79.4, self-hosted version.
