Improve SVG support for Word export
Since Office 2019, MS Word for Windows seems to have good support for SVG images.
That's great, because it would allow us to make exports of Jama documentation with (externally created) vector diagrams in it. Right now, there does not seem to be any proper way to do so.
However, somehow currently the formatting gets messed up. SVG images do not look like the originals anymore, with font styles being changed and other more and less noticable differences.
Jama, could you please improve support for SVG images in Word exports?
If this happens to be a known issue, I'd love to hear what's the status and if it is planned to be fixed at some point.

Could someone from Jama shed some light on this topic? I am very interested to know:
- Does Jama consider this to be an issue?
- If so, is there a timeline for resolving this?
Thanks!

Hello,
Is this community frequented by Jama employees at all?
Or is this not the right place to ask questions like this?

Thanks, I followed up with support for this.
For future reference, below the conversation thread I had with support.
I also submitted an idea on this: https://community.jamasoftware.com/idea/vector-images-and-exporting-them

Hi, Edward / Folkert, thanks for your reply.
Due to security reasons, Jama Product does not support and will not allow .svg images in reports, nor has plans to expand .svg services in reports due to security standards. Word converts the .svg to a .png every time. Sometimes it seems like a .svg image exports to a report from Jama, but that can be of an HTML img base64 dataURI of an .svg and Word converts it to .png.
SVG just from WIRIS are supported in the cloud as we trust and control their creation, however, there are issues with SVG quality from WIRIS to Word which is why the high-res PNG options have been introduced.

Dear Luis,
Thanks for the explanation.
I do not think we'd care much for .mht files, but I tried what happens if you convert a .docx with an SVG figure into PDF (both Save As and using the Microsoft PDF printer) and that does not look very good either. This makes the SVG support in Word rather limited and maybe not a feature worth pursuing after all.
May I suggest to also update the community topic about this with the above info?

Hi Edward, thanks for your patience in waiting,
After discussing this with one of our Engineers, they explained to us that Microsoft Word converts .svg to .png or .jpg everytime if a file is converted from a .docx to a .mht file. Microsoft Word indeed allows for .svg but if you try to create something out of the standards or different way/process with an .svg in Microsoft and "Save As" a single file web page it would be converted to a base64 .png or .jpg.
The SVGs are not allowed in Custom Reports due to security. To get the best quality image into the report, the images need to be quality .png. If the .png images are sized to the approximate size of what is desired in the output report, you should render with clean edges. The template sizes images as they are sized in Jama, unless the image exceeds the page dimensions, and then the image is sized to be 100% of the longest edge of the image in relationship to the page margins.
Let us know if this information clears up your concern about this topic,Luis Prudoth

Dear Luis,
Thanks, that partially explains the status quo.
However, in the article you quote it states that MS Word does not support SVG, this is no longer correct. Since 2019, SVG is supported by MS Word (at least on the Windows system I am working on). Also, SVG images do somehow end up in Word, so some form of exporting is done.
I just tried adding an SVG file to an exported Word document and noticed that the exports are done in .doc, not the contemporary .docx. I think this is where the crux lies: .doc does not support SVG whereas .docx does. So as long as .doc is the export format, vector support is very limited.
Are there any plans to start supporting .docx then?

Hi Edward, thanks for your reply. I'm replying on behalf of Roberto who is currently off. I did some more investigation.
The behavior you are experiencing is due to the SVG files not being fully supported as part of the rich text in Jama, they are still interpreted by the browser when added to the rich text but the functionality is limited, and the export of SVG images is also not supported. We apologize for the confusion on this. In this link HERE, you will find more details at the bottom of the page

Dear Roberto,
Thanks for checking, good to put this on Jama's radar then.
I do not mean to be cynical, but isn't an idea to resolve something that is not working as expected usually called a "bug"? Could you enter this into the bug tracking system and even be expedited for timely resolution?
Submitting this as "product idea" seems to me like it will result in less urgency for the development team as it does not do justice to the nature of this issue.
I generally do like the concept of being able to submit ideas and may certainly make use of this.

Hi Edward,
Thank you so much for the details. After looking at the images we have checked and at the moment there is no ongoing issue regarding the SVG images format.
This is a great insight for our Ideation module in the Community! This is a valuable space where we solicit and gather product feedback. We are using this space to add more focus to the Feature/Product requests and feedback from our users. Here is a helpful article detailing our Product Ideas Process. You can also review our Ideation Datasheet if you would like a breakdown of Jama's Product Idea submission process.
You can go here, and use the search functionality to see if your idea is already in there. If it is, then you can vote and comment on the card, which informs the Product that many users would benefit from the idea. If there isn't, please post a new idea card! Your submissions can be filtered and found in multiple ways; category, votes, status, most recently submitted, etc. You can also use the dynamic search bar capability to search the cards for any similar ideas, (hint: getting into the habit of crafting a relevant title will help this function work for everyone) then vote/comment on a similar idea or post a new one! Look around, vote, comment, and post your ideas. We look forward to the discussions ahead.
We are committed to your success and delivering the best support possible.Best regards,
Roberto

Hi Support,
On Radjesh's suggestion, I'm referring you to Folkert's community article (https://community.jamasoftware.com/discussion/improve-svg-support-for-word-export#bm018288fb-60e6-47e8-a116-0188e313edd7) on improving SVG output to Word/Velocity reports.
Reproduced below:
Since Office 2019, MS Word for Windows seems to have good support for SVG images.
That's great, because it would allow us to make exports of Jama documentation with (externally created) vector diagrams in it. Right now, there does not seem to be any proper way to do so.
However, somehow currently the formatting gets messed up. SVG images do not look like the originals anymore, with font styles being changed and other more and less noticable differences.
Jama, could you please improve support for SVG images in Word exports?
If this happens to be a known issue, I'd love to hear what's the status and if it is planned to be fixed at some point.
Thanks,
Ed
